Huntingdon Valley (HV) played one of its best defensive games of the season in the opening round of the Southampton Tournament in beating Taney 9-2. HV scored all of its runs in the first 3 innings on route to the sound victory. HV received strong pitching from starter Nick Brady (3 IP, 2 K's) and a rare relief appearance from All-Star Matt Acker (3 IP, 3 K's). The offense was also lead by Acker (2 for 3, 2 Runs Scored) and Bryce Horn (2 for 2, 2 RBI's).
In the 1st inning HV put runners on 1st and 2nd after walks to Acker and Jordan Leiber. Harrison Roesser singled in Acker to plate the games first run. Horn then followed by driving in Leiber and Roesser with a 2 run double to end the scoring. Brady worked out of a bases loaded jam when Leiber fielded a grounder to end the inning.
The 2nd inning HV went right back to work when with 2 outs Timmy Powitski walked and came around to score on a Double off the bat of Acker. Acker then ended the scoring in the inning by stealing home. Brady continued to dominate on the mound by giving up no runs.
The 3rd inning was the best of the day for HV when they scored 4 times to take a 9-0 lead. Walks by Roesser, Horn, Connor Killion and Victor Tang plated the 1st run of the inning. With no outs and the bases loaded Brady singled in 2 runs which was followed by a Matt Ginsberg run scoring single to end the scoring. The bottom of the inning was the same as the first 2. Brady went through the line up line McDonalds selling pancakes on Sunday Morning (quick and fast).
The 4th inning HV's only runner was a single by Horn. The bottom of the 4th inning HV called on Acker to pitch. Acker has seen very little time this season on the mound but you would not have thought it the way he pitched. Acker faced 5 batters in getting through the inning.
The 5th inning HV went down in order. The bottom of the 5th Acker continued to impress by facing 5 batters again while getting through the inning.
HV loaded the bases in the top of the 6th inning when they received singles from Johnny Armentani, Acker and Leiber only to leave them stranded. Acker went to the hill in the bottom of the inning for his 3rd inning of work. After a couple runs he worked out of a jam and ended the game.
HV now is 1-0 in the Southampton Tournament will play Roslyn tomorrow at 4:30 in its 2nd of 3 games in the 1st round of the tournament.
